The Friends of the Symphony provides valuable services to the orchestra
including ushering, rehearsal refreshments, and ticket sales.
Delicious truffles and gourmet coffee are sold at every concert intermission
to raise money for the Student Scholarship Fund.

Mission

Friends of the Symphony exists for the purpose of serving the orchestra by doing a variety of voluntary duties and contributing to the funding of the orchestra's Student Scholarship Program.

What Friends does

  • Provides ushering services at all concerts.
  • Provides refreshments at orchestra rehearsals
  • Helps with season ticket renewals and concert promotion
  • Sells truffles, gourmet coffee, sponsors other fund raisers, and donates this to the student scholarship fund.
  • Expands the general membership each year
  • Sends one member (may be the president) as an official delegate/member to NISO board meetings which are held the 4th Thursday at 3:45-5:00 in the Dordt College Campus Center Board Room or in Room 122A at NCC in Sheldon

The Friends Board

Consists of 8 members. Each member is assigned to a committee or is President-elect for one year and then President for two years. Terms are for 3 years, beginning on July 1, and may be renewed one year at a time. Board membership will be staggered, with no more than 2 members leaving the board at a time. The board will act as a nominating committee for new board members. 

Board Committees

Each committee shall consist of at least one member of the board and an unlimited number of members from the general Friends membership roll.
  • Membership 
    • Send form home with students to be returned at first concert
    • Signing up new members at all concerts
    • Contact parents of all student members, get list from business secretary
  • Ushering and Artist hosts 
    • - Ushering at all concerts
  • Rehearsal Refreshments 
  • Fund-raising 
    • purchase and/or make truffles and coffee
    • decide with the business secretary on designs for shirts, mugs, etc. from K-products
    • sets up the sales area and sell at all concerts 
  • Ticket Campaign 
    • Contacts all season ticket holders from the previous year who have not renewed
    • Contacts parents of all student members
    • Contacts Friends members who have not purchased season tickets
    • Helps with concert box office

Board Meetings 

Usually held on a Saturday one month prior to each concert at 9:00 am

  • Fall (October): 
    • Introduce new members 
    • Review committee duties 
    • Assign committees 
    • Financial report
    • Report of committees
    • Yearly report of conductor
    • General planning for upcoming concert 
  • Winter (January): 
    • Report of committees 
    • General planning for upcoming concert
  • Spring (March): 
    • Report of committees 
    • Vote in new board members 
    • Election of president for the next year
    • General planning for upcoming concert 

Duties of the President

  • Set up meetings, time, place, agenda
  • Chair the board meetings
  • Appoint committee members
  • Work with committee chairs to make sure they accomplish their goals
  • Pose for a yearly picture as the scholarship donation is made at the Fall Concert
  • Send a sympathy card or birth congratulatory card on behalf of the orchestra, Board and “Friends” upon advisement of the personnel committee. In the event of the death of a NISO player, flowers will be sent to the immediate family

Duties of the President-elect

  • Assist President and other committee members as needed

Duties of the Business Secretary

  • Takes care of all financial matters
  • Keeps the membership and volunteer database updated
  • Makes out forms used for membership, etc.
  • Works with the fund-raising committee 
  • Takes notes and distributes minutes
  • Gives a financial report at the fall meeting
  • Paid for her Friends work by NISO

Fiscal Agent

  • The Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra is the fiscal agent for all funds raised
  • All bookkeeping is done by the business secretary of the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra

Publicity for Friends

  • Names of all Friends members will be listed in each NISO program.
  • Names of all Friends officers will be listed in each NISO program
  • A short information statement about what Friends does and how to join will be included in each program.
