Get Outside

“This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” – Psalm 118:24

Steven Bouma-Prediger is an esteemed scholar of ecology and theology.  In his book, For the Beauty of the Earth, he urges us to get to know nature. He says, “We care for only what we love.  We love only what we know.  We truly know only what we experience.”  He goes on to say that if we do not understand our surroundings, we are bound to abuse or destroy them.

In Genesis, God told man to “be fruitful, and multiply”  “to subdue and have dominion.”  Many people appear to translate the word “dominion” to mean domination.  They believe that God has given us the ultimate authority over His creation, and we can do with it however we please.

While we should not destroy nature, we can use it and take delight in it. After all, nature is the handiwork of the God we adore! Throughout the school year, everyone gets busy.  However, when you are stressed or have some free time, why not get outside and get to know your surroundings.  There is more than corn in Northwest Iowa. :)
