The Music Sub-course of Core 160 shares as its goals those of the course as a whole:

  • to learn to define music from a Christian perspective,

  • to experience many varied examples from musical styles and periods,

  • to be able to identify the structural aspects of music, and to learn how each of the parts work together in creating an impact on the work's audience, and

  • to be able to critique contemporary musical compositions.

Required Texts:

  • Ferris, Jean (ed.), Music: The Art of Listening (7th edition) 4CD set  [A single copy of the CD set is on reserve in the Music Department's Listening Lab]

  • DeMol, Karen, Sound Stewardship: How Shall Christians Think About Music?

Evaluation:
