PUBLIC SERVICE
    I am available to speak at to groups such as FFA banquets and other events.  I will also on occasion go to schools to present information and subject material of mutual interest.  Feel free to contact me about a possible request.
     

    I have done consulting work for USAID, Foods Resource Bank, Land O' Lakes, and other organizations.  Most of my work has been in Latin America, but I will consider other locations.  

    The public is invited to inquire about participation in the Nicaragua course.  The course is suitable for public participation.

My Master's work tested the efficacy of an ELISA test (Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay) to improve reproductive efficiency in dairy cows.
 
I did my doctoral work in the study of attitudes and aspirations of rural youth of Northwest Iowa in the Agriculture Education and Studies Department at Iowa State University.

I have served on numerous committees at Dordt College, served as one of two faculty officers in both positions, secretary and chair of the faculty, and I direct a departmental internship program (Practicum).  I teach Introduction to Animal Science, Swine Science, Agriculture Marketing, Orientation and Ag Safety, Directed Study, and a introductory general education course that is required by all incoming freshmen.  I am also responsible for an international summer course that goes to Nicaragua for 2-3 weeks.   I have also team taught a general education course for juniors and seniors that is a capstone course in the general education program.
 
My area of training is Agriculture Education with specialties in the areas of animal science, safety, and agricultural marketing. I also have experience teaching beekeeping, animal nutrition, dairy science, and reproductive physiology.

I initiated and guided to completion an articulation agreement with the University of Nebraska at Lincoln to allow students to pursue a degree in agriculture education by taking course work for three years at Dordt College and finish their last year at the University of Nebraska.

I am a co-advisor to the Agriculture Club and a faculty advisor to the Pre-Vet Club.

Mikes Schouten and I organize and direct the annual AgBiotech Tours for high schools students in the region every spring.

I have written articles for the Journal of Theriogenology, Banner, Hoard's Dairyman, Christian Farmers publications, Pro Rege, Renewal, Ag Ed Magazine, Journal of Agricultural Education, and Tri-State Neighbor.  A more extensive list will be provided upon request.
 
I have contributed to the content of technical manuals for use in lesser developed countries for the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee.

D. Awards

I was selected "Author of Year in 2003" by the National Association of Agricultural Education.

I was selected as 1 of 20 participants from Iowa that participated in a two-year program of rural leadership development. The award included training sessions in Iowa, Minnesota, and Washington, D.C.

I was awarded membership in the Gamma Sigma Delta honor society in 1998.

E. Significant Non-Faculty Positions
 
I have done consulting work for organizations both locally and internationally.
 
I have been a board member and have served on the four member executive board as vice-president (3 yrs) for the international relief organization Christian Reformed World Relief Committee. I was involved for six years (1990-1996).
 
I was on the Executive Committee of the Siouxland Diaconal Conference. I served for five years (1991-1996).
 
I serve on the Executive Committee of the Sioux County Cattle Feeders Association
 

I am a school board member of Western Christian High School.
 
F. Past and Continuing Faculty Roles

My responsibilities at Dordt College have included Director of the Practicum, Department Chairman, and membership on various college committees. I have had teaching responsibilities in the areas of animal science (Introduction, swine science, dairy science) and the farm management/agriculture marketing areas. I directed the operation of the college farm (Agriculture Stewardship Center) for four years. I have served on various committees, have been an Advisor to the Ag Club and Pre-Vet Club, and I advise approximately 30 students (pre-veterinarians and agriculture majors).
 
G. Miscellaneous
 
I worked in Latin America (Mexico) for five years in agriculture and community development work. I am able to communicate in Spanish.

I was heavily involved in planning, acquisition, development, and construction of the facilities known as the Dordt College Agriculture Stewardship Center which includes land (300 acres) and livestock operations (swine, dairy, and beef) plus I am heavily involved in a joint coordinated effort with Trans Ova Genetics, a livestock embryo transfer organization. We are coordinating business and academia in the education of college students.

I worked on a cow-side progesterone study at the dairy facility. I have worked in a research project at the dairy of the Stewardship Center testing whether or not the addition of flavoring agents to feedstuffs will enhance the palatability of feed materials. I have worked in cooperation with various companies to test feed additives. There have been various investigative projects that are too numerous to mention.
 
I have been involved in many community service projects including an extensive tree establishment project at the Heritage Village. I served on a committee that developed an art work depicting native prairie in the region which is now located in our city park.
 
I maintain bee hives and work with 10 colonies as a hobby. I am also involved in other agricultural activities .

I have done consulting work for the USAID, Foods Resource Bank, Land O' Lakes, and other organizations.

I am working with local high schools to encourage the development of agriculture education programs in their schools.
 
I have served as a deacon twice (specific duties included treasurer and chairman) and most recently as an elder for two different terms of the church council at Covenant Christian Reformed Church.
